A Penny for your thoughts.
For a long time, each time after saying to my partner: »A penny for your thoughts«, I never believed her answer: »Nothing. I’m not thinking about anything.« It seemed made up – how can one not think at every single second? Is that even possible? It’s a topic we usually don’t talk about as a society.
It seemed like a revelation when meditation practice started opening doors, revealing a truer nature of our minds. Although the ability to not actively be involved with their thoughts may be a natural ability for some, it sure as hell wasn’t for me. Getting proof that at least a couple of seconds of »silence« is possible to achieve was the first step. The second one is showing up each and every day after that – roughly 3,5 years worth of proof.
These days, years after spending a lot of imaginary pennies on trying to know my partner’s thoughts, our kid sometimes asks me: »Dad, what are you thinking about?« And I get to tell him: »Nothing. I’m not thinking about anything.« I can see it in his eyes he doesn’t believe me – how can one not think at every single second? Is that even possible? It’s a topic we definitely should talk about.
