Curiosity or: how to harness the underflow of your mind?
As a species we »understand« only about 5% of what the universe is made out of. Personally I understand way less than even 1%, but by reading on themes like dark matter, dark energy, quantum entanglement and multiverses, my mind starts racing: Instead of just our random and improbable universe, isn’t it more probable that all universes exist, occupying the same space-time, all together being everything? So that we’re then just tuned into our particular universe, like an electron has a fixed position only when observed. Could dark matter be some exotic, yet undiscovered particle that, in it’s superstate, is echoing the multiverse, like a bridge between worlds? ... The wonder of existence blows my mind.
Did you know that around 80% of our conscious thoughts are leaning towards the negative? Generally, thinking about concepts that blow your mind causes you to »move out of yourself« and stop thinking about the pressures you face at work, what music you want to listen to, what you want for lunch, etc. You let go. It's not dissimilar to the feeling we have right before we fall asleep. That’s where the »magic« is. Some of us also find that moment when we’re taking a shower, or washing dishes. We release the tight grip of control we have over what we mentally engage with by semi-focusing on an automated task and letting go at the same time. By adding a pinch of curiosity to those moments, we can hone in and harness the underflow of our mind, your unfiltered ideas, the big fish. A process like working on an animation piece requires us to be curious to better fuel creativity and to remind us to keep moving.
“having a cup of curiosity a day will get you there”
So think of curiosity like a muscle. You can train by applying curiosity to your tasks and conversations a couple of times a day. The more you’ll do it, the more your mind will get used to feeling that way, and it’ll be that much easier for you to call on that muscle/feeling when needed. So whether it’s to catch your next great idea, or just to clear your head, I hope having a cup of curiosity a day will get you there, feeling happier and more present. In this particular universe.
